Our History

A Long History of Helping Clients and Community

The new Avail Wealth Management office can trace its history back to 1947.  It was originally started by Herman Ulrich, a true gentleman in every sense.  After serving in the Army during World War II Herman started helping his clients with financial management, through the Lincoln National Life Insurance Company.  In 1957 he sold his insurance business and joined Harvey Investments of Watertown, SD.  Herman joined John G. Kinnard, a regional investment firm based in Minneapolis, MN, from 1960 to 1980.  Many current clients started with Herman during this time.  In 1980 Herman made the switch to the company he loved, AG Edwards and Sons, Inc. a St. Louis based brokerage firm established in 1887.  He opened the branch office on 3rd and Wisconsin in the old Hickory House, current office of Steven Hein, CPA.  He also started satellite offices in Pierre and Mitchell.  He was very proud of his firm, he started the 176thbranch office and when he retired from AG Edwards in 2000 at the age of 80, there were over 700 branch locations in America.  He truly enjoyed working with his clients each day.  During his tenure as Branch Manager, Herman hired Susan Searing (1987), Steven Gohn (1992) and Sherman Gose (1992).  The tenure of these current employees is a testament to Herman’s leadership.  Herman passed away in 2012, and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

In 1994 the branch office moved to the Center Plaza on 3rd and Dakota.  In 2002, Sherman and Steve became Co-Branch Managers and Susan became a Financial Advisor for AG Edwards.  Many changes occurred over the next few years.  In 2005 they started a satellite office in Brookings, SD.  In 2007 AG Edwards and Wachovia Securities merged to become Wachovia Securities, one of the largest brokerage firms in America, and kept its home office in St. Louis.  In 2008 they moved the branch location from downtown Huron to its current location at 875 Dakota Ave. S.  In 2008 Wells Fargo Clearing Services, LLC (WFCS, LLC) acquired Wachovia Securities, again choosing to keep the headquarters in St. Louis.  Annette Bowen and Alyssa Kirk keep the office humming and clients entertained.  Even though the name changed, WFCS, LLC continued using Wachovia's original platforms so very little changed for the clients.  Throughout all the moves, name changes, recessions, tech bubble crash and housing market crash, the office has worked hard for their clients, to keep them moving toward their financial goals.

During 2012 Steve, Sherman and Susan made the decision to go independent, and created Avail Wealth Management, LLC.  Although this meant another name change, very little changed for their clients because they chose to use Wells Fargo Advisors Financial Network, LLC as their broker dealer.  The shift to independence was a seamless.

John Pfitzer joined Avail in 2016 as a Financial Advisor, with many years of experience.  Avail is pleased with his decision to join our firm.

They feel very fortunate to have an association with such a strong broker dealer in the community.  They can call on a home office with over 5,000 employees dedicated to helping their clients.  Very few firms have such a strong back office supporting their brokers.  The home office employees are usually specialized in very specific areas to help clients differing needs.

Being locally owned brings a lot back to our community and they are proud to partner again with many local business owners. We are a wealth management practice employing 6 individuals in Huron, SD.  Susan, Steve, and Sherman are the partners and Financial Advisors, John is also a Financial Advisor. Annette is the Operations/Administrative Manager and Alyssa is a Client Associate.

The office works with a diverse group of clients, providing a wide range of services.  Avail primarily works with clients to help develop long term Investment and retirement plans.  They help clients select individual investments, professional money managers, and the appropriate retirement plan and provider.  The office has helped many local business owners and farmers set up retirement benefit plans such as 401(k), 403b, Simple IRAs, and SEPs.  They have also assisted with insurance, succession and estate planning strategies.

Individuals can find help with retirement planning, IRAs, educational accounts, life and long term care insurance.  The office is committed to listening and understanding what is important to their clients and their goals.  Once a goal is clarified, they work closely to help develop an intelligent financial solution unique to the situation.  They help monitor the progress and make any adjustments as client needs or markets adjust.

The staff enjoys going to work every day, having fun and working with their clients.  Volunteering is a high priority at the office, and the staff has worked hard at giving back to the community.  Every member of the team has helped with United Way through the Day of Caring and the backpack program.  A couple of recognizable annual events the office helped create include the Chamber’s Parade of Lights and the Ravine Lake Triathlon.

The office has served on many committees with the Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement, Huron Community Foundation, Huron Community Campus, Huron Area Center for Independence Foundation, Huron University Foundation, Huron Community Development Fund, Greater Huron Development Corporation, Huron Junior Athletics, Huron Youth Basketball, Huron Youth Wrestling, Partners in Business with Huron Schools, Girls on the Run, Leadership Huron, and the City Park & Recreation Board.

Being able to give back to the community through time, and donations is one thing Avail Wealth Management is proud of.  With the community’s continued support you will see Avail’s name on many more worthy projects in the future.
